Opening shot of short lived show ‘Drive’

Nathan Fillion as Alex Tully.

Look what I found on an old back up disc. This had so much potential with a sterling cast  and writer / creator Tim Minear.  Cancelled by Fox after just 4 episodes - Premiere aired 15th April and cancelled on 25th of the same month. 10 days. Insane.

maisesmar:

Here you can see several of the unicorns Castle-related tweets, recently tweeted by @NathanFillion. Stroke their shiny fur for a while. Marvel at their existence. After all wise fandom persons told you to abandon hope of seeing one in your lifetime. Yet here they are, you just somehow missed them. Damn that evil browncoat magic.

At the bottom you can see the Firefly-related tweet that angered some people yesterday so very much.

Notice the number of retweets/favorites. Compare. Meditate for half an hour and the answer will come to you. Maybe.

As for me, I only have questions.

1. How is it possible that people who clamor and weep for Castle-related tweets from  @NathanFillion somehow fail to acknowledge them and react to them in any way when they actually happen?

2. What the owner of said Twitter account is supposed to think when hearing this weeping and comparing the numbers? That Castle fans following him are selectively visually impaired? That those weeping are the loud minority, that activates only when there’s a Firefly tweet happens threatening their Castle-loving existence?

I don’t have answers.

Bless you. And let me predict that you won’t get any logical answers for that.

I wouldn’t be harping on about it over a decade later.

It’s not anything against Firefly, Anon. I’ve watched Firefly, and while it wasn’t my thing, I absolutely understand why so many people love it. I understand that they feel cheated and that FOX did the fans and the actors wrong etc. I get it, I feel for all of you but it was twelve years ago. Firefly isn’t coming back and, if it did, your odds of Nathan reprising the role of Malcolm Reynolds are honestly very slim.

And I don’t hate Nathan. I like the guy, but there comes a point when you’ve got to stop egging on the fans and go about your business. He’s currently on a tv show that is his longest successful employment in his career, that tv show has a DVD coming out on Tuesday. Instead of quipping about Firefly not getting a season two, why not also pitch Castle or, you know, don’t say anything at all if you aren’t in the mood to promote it.

I’m already over it, it was a knee jerk reaction, but I still think it holds merit. But, of course, its my opinion so its natural that I hold it to that regard.

I honestly try to stay away from this bullshit but sometimes it really gets on my nerves. This is actually one of the main reasons why I prefer to stay away from this fandom. You guys are so damn intolerant and disrespectful towards your leading man and the fandom of “that other show” he’s been on before that it doesn’t make you look pretty, no matter how hard you try. It actualy makes you look petty, jealous and immature.  And ungrateful, because in case you forgot, it was due to Fillion’s fanbase, i.e. Browncoats, and their initial support, that your beloved show had not been cancelled after the first season. Firefly fans supported your show from the very beginning and made it possible for it to last until it became popular enough to stand on its own legs. So yes, way to diss them now and tell the lead to stop being grateful and stop respect the fandom that brought him where he is now. Only guess what — he won’t listen. And guess why? Because you’re not the only fandom he’s got. He still has another fandom to talk to. And that other fandom is still numerous, avid and passionate, whether you like it or not. Not to say they are in general way more gracious, polite and respectful compared to many of you guys. Sorry, but this is true, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that he prefers to talk to them sometimes (though he does respond to many of the Castle fans as well — actually, he interacts with all his fans regularly — and not only when he needs their votes for his “projects” — and he tweets about Castle as well, and all in all he promotes it way more than any other cast member, only you, of course, chose not to notice). I can understand your bitterness to some degree — as I strongly doubt that Castle as a show will ever be as popular and critically acclaimed and considered “a cult classic” and still have an avid fanbase even 12 years after its cancellation, but this has already happened to Firefly, whether you like it or not, so why not just deal with it and at least try to stay cool and classy? “If it’s even possible for you”.

Yes, let’s talk about being “cool and classy”. Good topic. Being cool and classy would involve not going into a bitchfest because someone dared to admit they don’t enjoy the show that you obviously love. Being cool and classy? Also involves not making blanket assumptions about a fandom that you freely admit you stay away from.

I mean, if you stay away from them? How exactly do you know what kind of behavior goes on? Twitter is NOT a good section of the Castle fandom from which to peruse. And, furthermore, I’d invite you to take a deeper look at my blog and find any instance beyond this one where I’ve taken issue with anything Nathan Fillion has done. You won’t find very much because, generally, I really enjoy him and don’t actually give a shit that he loves Firefly so much. This was one time, and, SURPRISE, I’m entitled to my opinion.

As a final note? I don’t actually care how critically acclaimed something is. If I find it boring? I’m not going to watch it. I’m also not going to grovel to anyone who honestly thinks I owe them for keeping a show on the air or blindly worships any celebrity to the point that they cannot have a fault or produce anything but love and praise from people.

Well, I’m actually eager to admit that it was not very classy of me to even respond to your bitchfest with my own, it would be much wiser just to ingore it, which I do in 99% of times when I see something like this. Maybe it was harder to ignore this time because I actually liked you blog and considered you one of the mature and “reasonable” ones, so dissapointment took the better of me, for which I apologize. Your furher arguments only prove that, actually.

I understand that it’s useless, but still. No, you are not bound to “blindly worship any celebrity to the point that they cannot have a fault”. No, he’s not my Captain, nor is he your Castle. He’s just an actor who plays in some shows that we like (or dislike), and I think he, like any human being, deserves to be treated with some R-E-S-P-E-C-T, as well is entitled to his own likes and dislikes, and freedom to express them on his own damn twitter account. You start publically whining and bitching about his likes and dislikes, literally telling him what he should and should not do? Be ready that not everyone will applaud you for this. Some people will actually find it immature and disgusting. That’s their opinion, and they are as entitled to it as you are to yours, so deal with it. Dixi.

It’s not a bitchfest if I am responding to a question that someone poses. It’s literally an explantion of why I don’t like his tweet. It became a bitchfest when you took it upon yourself to make all Castle fans ungrateful and rude and to try and make your love of Firefly more important and more valid than our love of Castle because, in your estimation, you treat Fillion better.

All I’m getting from you is that you are upset that I don’t like Nathan’s opinion. Okay, whatever, that’s fine. But just like he is entitled to post what he wants on Twitter? I’m entitled to disagree with it and say that I didn’t appreciate it.

What is uncalled for? Vilifying the entire fanbase because you’ve seen one thing that you don’t agree with on my blog, or assuming that because there are a few bad apples who don’t like Nathan that we must ALL behave that way. That’s you stepping in to save Nathan from the mean, horrible Castle bloggers who only live to tear him down and point out his faults. Those people are out there, and I’m proud to say that I’m not one of them.

You can have respect for someone and disagree with what they do or say. I can have respect for someone and not particularly enjoy their stance on something. Respect and disagreements aren’t mutually exclusive, you can have one go hand in hand with the other.

Now, if I were calling him a ass, or something along those lines? Sure, feel free to come at me with pitchforks and tar. But all I said was that I wish he would have taken the time to also promote the show he is on instead of continually posting about Firefly. I also said it sarcastically, but if that offends you? You clearly don’t pay enough attention to my blog. And do you really think Nathan Fillion is going to get upset by sarcasm? I’d make a hefty bet that he wouldn’t.

The need to defend him and to paint Castle fans as the villains? That’s what falls into blind worship. It sends the message that you cannot stand it when someone isn’t madly in love with him or fawning over his tweets. As I’ve said before, he’s a big boy, he’s had much worse said/done to him than my sarcastic dislike of one tweet.

And I’ll clear up one final thing. The reason you got a reply? Is because you are talking crap about MY fandom. I can talk shit about them all day because, while some of them drive me nuts? They are still part of this crazy website and we have a common interest/love in Castle. Someone outside of our fandom does that? I’m gonna defend them down to the ground and then some. It’s not because I’m upset you don’t like me or that I’ve disappointed you. You aren’t the first person to complain at me on here, you won’t be the last. I don’t particularly care if someone likes my opinion or not, or if expressing it makes me unreasonable. You are free to find me immature and disgusting, I’ll sleep just fine.

Listen, I really don’t want to continue this argument with you, as it’s obviously clear that we won’t change each other’s opinion. But you leave me no choice, as you keep putting things in my mouth that I never actually wrote, so let me clarify something for you, once and for all.

First of all, I never implied that my love for Firefly is “more important and valid” than your love for Castle — it’s actually one of these immature, kindergarten-level arguments that YOU started, not me. My point was — let’s try to respect that other fandom, too, you guys. Let’s try to be cool about the fact that your leading man has another fandom besides yours he loves to interact with (on his own free time and on his own account, mind you). Let’s try not to be petty and jealous about it. Hopeless business, I know, but let’s at least try to be mature.

Second, FYI, the fact that I defend Mr. Fillion from what I consider to be unfair and groundless accusations does not automatically mean such things as “madly in love”, “fawning” and “blind worship”. Maybe in some world of twisted logic it does, of course, but in my world it only means that I find these particular accusations to be unfair and groundless, period. And unfortunately I see them far too often coming from the Castle fandom to have a right to generalize. I’m not saying 100% of avid Castle fans are like that, but they are noticeable enough, and whether you like it or not, they are contributing to the “group portrait” of a fandom, when seen from the outside.

Speaking “from the outside”, I used to be inside the fandom, too. I actually quite liked Castle, and I still consider the first 3 seasons to be one of the most witty and sparkly and entertaining procedurals on American TV. And the fact that I’m just not as passionate about it like I used to be, doesn’t mean I don’t respect the cast and the reasonable part of the fandom. But sadly, the most vocal part is not always the most reasonable one.

And lastly - yes, of course Mr. Fillion is a big boy and he doesn’t need my (or anyone else’s, for that matter) defence from people like you. “Haters gonna hate”, etc. But just as you may feel annoyed every time he dares to mention Firefly, I’m equally annoyed every time I see “he never promotes Castle” BS. Simply because it is not true. You must be deliberately blind and biased not to notice all the various ways he promotes Castle — like I said, overall he promotes it way more often than anyone else from the cast. The interesting thing is, when he actually DOES tweet something about Castle, you guys chose to ignore it. When he tweets, say, photos of the crew members, or photos with some guest stars, or other BTS stuff, or writes some Castle-related tweet, it hardly gets any attention from you, at least here on tumblr - maybe a couple of dozen of notes, that’s it. The same happens with other types of promotion that he does, be it his answering Castle questions on the cons, or giving Castle-related interviews to the press, etc. — it almost looks like his opinions about Castle doesn’t really interest the fandom (of course, he’s not “the shipper king”, I know). It seems much more “interesting” and “rewarding” to consider him NOT be promoting the show, just because you like it that way, and chose to deliberately ingore everything that contradicts your established point of view. And I’m pretty sure that even if I or someone else would ever bother to collect all his numerous tweets and pics related to Castle and show it in your face, you would still be complaining that it’s not enough — simply because he contunies to post about Firefly as well. If this is not petty and childish, then I don’t know what is. And I’m really done this time, so I’ll save you the trouble of answering.
